Big Idea: How can a righteous God declare unrighteous people
righteous without compromising His own righteous character? In Romans, Paul writes to
the church, those who treasure Jesus, to unpack just how deep the root of sin is and
give an ever-expanding appreciation and enjoyment of how great the grace of God is
that destroys it.
...Everyone is guilty of sinning against God. Everyone is unrighteous.
Everyone is without excuse. God’s problem is not solved because people
are actually righteous. (1:18-3:20)
...The only solution is Jesus. For God to maintain His holy righteous
character, He, and He alone had to solve the problem of our sin. Jesus the
judge is also the justifier. There is no one else. There is no other way. (3:21-26)
...Faith and faith alone in Jesus is all that is needed and is all that will work.
Because Jesus is the only solution, we must genuinely trust in Jesus.
(3:27-5:20)
